A Story

See this dog.

Let me tell you a little story about this dog. You see this dog has a history; a past if you will. She is not very bright. In fact she is down right dumb. In the past we have been able to keep her out of trouble. A quick jerk of the leash here, a strong word there. It wasn't easy but we did it because we are her people.
Last night, Jason went outside to let her in for dinner. He called. Nothing. He called again. Nothing. By now I had come to the door too. I called. Nothing. I told him she might have gotten her lead caught around something. He went down the stairs to investigate. He pulled her lead. It came easy. She wasn't on it. He pulled in her lead with her collar still attached. I panicked. She wasn't there. I rushed back in and got a flashlight and a leash and headed out into the night. I called loud. Nothing. Again. Nothing. Then I heard something. I turned and she was racing for me. Relief filled me. She is a a good dog. I didn't want her hit by a car or anything. You remember, she isn't that bright. I walked her up on the porch and the smell hit me. BAD! BAD! BAD! smell. Skunk but worse. So bad. We took her to the mud room to regroup. I did a quick google search and found this recipe. I mixed. I bathed. I rinsed. I smelled. Still stinky. Not as bad but still there. I am out of ingredients. This morning I am off the the drug store to buy more peroxide. For now she is in her crate in the basement. It stinks down there. Sorry Daisy. You dumb mutt.

BTW, does anyone know of any skunk smell remover besides the old tomato juice trick? The google gods say is doesn't work.

Don't forget about my project for this month. For each and every person who visits my site this month I am giving one nickel to Food For the Poor. Tell everyone you come across to come and spend my money. Thanks for your help.

Aw, poor Daisy!

I don't know about removing skunk smells. Fortunately, our wide-roaming Malamute never got entangled with one.

We frequently drive past road-killed skunk on our two-lane canyon road. The stink stays with you a couple miles.

You get a vote! We really loved your visit and genuinely appreciate your comment! Aren't Dexters adorable? I love that they are so little and yet -- so useful.

I love your blog! We were always told that tomato juice helped but it never has touched the stink when our dogs got sprayed (not our current dogs but the ones we had growing up). Good luck!

Blessings and thanks!

Oh dear. You probably don't remember our skunk loving dog Quinn who would get sprayed and then come lay under the house. It was not good. Hope Miss Daisy get de-odor-fied soon!

Mud, coat her in mud and let it dry... Then rinse her off afterwards. I guess the mud absorbs the smelly oil from the fur and skin.

Oh NO! We have had that problem once or twice with our dogs - nothing really gets the smell out. We used something we got at the Feed store - some country remedy.

Take care - Kellan

Hi, I came over from Razor Family Farms.
Getting sprayed by skunk is always one thing I fear for my dogs. I have always thought tomato juice is the only method that works. Good luck!

I was just reading some fact and fiction on home remedies on MSN and saw this. Hope it helps:
"2. Tomato juice will de-skunk the dog.
True! But it's not very practical, since you'll need a tremendous amount of juice after shampooing your dog - and we're not talking about a couple of small cans. Plus, you might also stain your pet's fur pink. Some vets swear by commercial de-skunking products like Skunk-Off. The Bobst Hospital of the Animal Medical Center in New York City recommends a solution of 1 cup of white vinegar diluted with 1 gallon of water. But Good Housekeeping veterinarian Holly Cheever says that nothing will get rid of skunk odors completely.

Thanks everyone for you remedies. I have tried most of them in the last 24 hours. We are still a little funky but nothing like the other night. If you are planning a trip to our house, I would hold off for a couple of days. We stink.

This reminds me of my parents' dog who wandered out in the dark and fell into the drainage ditch next to the house. Which was full. With mud and much and grossness.

Yeah - those were good times. Smelly good times. But not as smelly as your good times!
